Sakic, the  Avalanche's longtime captain who led the team to two Stanley Cup titles, will retire on Thursday, July 9, 2009,  and end his 20-year NHL career, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because Sakic, a 13-time All-Star, will formally announce his decision Thursday in a news conference. Longtime Colorado Avalanche captain Joe Sakic is officially retiring after 20 seasons and two Stanley Cup titles.
